Questions families ask before they decide

A stair lift is new to most Indian homes. So the questions come quickly. Will the society allow it? We rent this flat — can we still have one? Our steps are marble — is that a problem? What if we move?

These are fair questions. Here are the answers, one by one.

Is it fixed to the wall?

No. The track of the stairlift is fixed to the steps with small screws, not to the wall, so your walls are untouched.

It runs on batteries that charge from a normal plug point, so it works in a power cut.

Can it be removed later?

Yes. The stairlift can be removed later — when you move house, or when it is no longer needed. A few small screw holes are left in the steps.

Flats and housing societies

Stairs inside your own flat, duplex or row house. Are the stairs your own, inside a duplex flat, a row house or a bungalow? Then you need no permission from anyone.

Common stairs in the building. If the stairlift goes on stairs that everyone in the building uses, you need the society’s consent. We give you a letter for the society, to show the committee.

A few tips for the society:

  • Ask the committee early, and show them our letter.
  • Tell your neighbours what it is for, before the work starts.
  • Explain that the track is fixed to the steps, not the wall, and that it can be removed later.

What neighbours see

On common stairs, your neighbours see a track along the side of the steps. To see how much room the stairlift takes, read Narrow stairs.

Rented homes

You can have a stairlift in a rented home. You need your landlord’s consent first.

The track is fixed to the steps, not to the wall, and it can be removed later. This makes it easier to agree. Agree with your landlord, in writing, what happens to the stairlift when you leave.

Marble, granite and other stone steps

Many Indian homes have marble or granite steps. Families worry about their stone.

Tell us if your steps are marble, granite or tile. We check them at the free home survey and fix the rail carefully, with small screws into the steps — not the wall. If the stairlift is ever taken out, a few small screw holes are left in the steps.

Narrow stairs

Many flats and row houses have narrow stairs. A stairlift needs a certain width to fit. We measure your stairs at the free home survey.

To give you an idea: folded, an Elan straight stairlift sticks out about 32 cm from the wall, and an Elite about 38 cm. For stairs with turns, the track is made for your staircase.

If you are not sure, send us a photo of your stairs on WhatsApp. We suggest the type of stairlift and an indicative price.
