How a stairlift works, and what keeps it safe
When the stairs get hard, the upstairs rooms slowly close. The bedroom, the terrace, the puja room. A stairlift opens them again. Every floor of your home, within reach again. Here is how it works, in plain words.
What a stairlift is
A stairlift is a chair lift for stairs. It has a seat that runs along a rail on your staircase. Your mother or father sits down, fastens the seat belt and presses the control. The seat carries them up or down the stairs.
At the top, the seat turns, so they step off away from the stairs. Not towards them.
How the rail is fixed
The rail is fixed to the steps with small screws, not to the wall, so your walls are untouched. Tell us if your steps are marble, granite or tile — we check them at the free survey and fix the rail carefully. If the stairlift is ever taken out, a few small screw holes are left in the steps.
One lift for each kind of staircase
- A straight staircase, as in many duplexes and row houses. A straight stairlift is installed in a single visit.
- Stairs that turn at a half-landing. The rail is made for your staircase; the date is in your quotation.
- A wheelchair user on the stairs. A wheelchair platform stairlift carries the person in their wheelchair.
- A few steps at the door. A step lift lifts you over them. It is on quotation.
It runs on batteries
Every seated stairlift works in a power cut. It runs on batteries that charge from a normal plug point. The wheelchair platform stairlift and the platform lift work in a power cut too.
So keep its plug point switched on. Then the batteries stay charged.
The safety features that matter
Every seated stairlift we offer has three things:
- a seat belt,
- a seat that turns at the top so you step off away from the stairs,
- and batteries so it works in a power cut.
When nobody is using it, the stairlift folds up. Folded, the Elan is about 32 cm from the wall and the Elite about 38 cm. We measure your stairs at the free survey.
On the day it is installed, we show your family how to use it.
